Grounded Strategy™ — Why Strategy Needs to Be Grounded in Reality
Strategy has a problem.
We are very good at creating strategic ambitions.
We are much less consistent at connecting those ambitions to what is actually happening in the market, what customers need, what competitors are doing, and what the enterprise is genuinely capable of delivering.
This is where I developed Grounded Strategy™ (GS™).
GS™ is both a way of thinking and a system for connecting real-world evidence to strategic action.
The principle is simple:
External Signals → Business Pressure → Business Friction → Capability → Opportunity → Strategic Action → Evidence & Learning
The important word is grounded.
A strategy should not begin with:
“What would we like to do?”
It should begin with:
“What is changing, why does it matter, and what does it mean for our business?”
That means connecting:
- Market and technology signals
• Customer Jobs to Be Done
• Competitive pressure
• Business friction
• Capability gaps and stress
• Strategic choices
• Transformation
• Measurable outcomes
The objective is not to predict the future perfectly.
That is impossible.
The objective is to build an enterprise that can sense change, interpret it, act on it, learn from the result and adapt faster than its environment changes.
This becomes even more important with AI.
AI is accelerating the rate at which new opportunities appear.
But opportunity without context can become noise.
Grounded Strategy™ provides the context.
It helps answer:
Why this opportunity?
Why us?
Why now?
What capability changes?
What evidence supports the decision?
What happens if we act—or don’t?
Ultimately, GS™ is about creating a self-reinforcing strategic learning system.
Strategy → Action → Evidence → Learning → Adaptation.
And that creates a different objective for strategy:
Don’t try to predict the future. Build an enterprise that is better prepared for it.
Part 2 will address the problem AI is making dramatically bigger:
If an enterprise has hundreds of opportunities, how do we decide which ones actually deserve scarce investment capacity?
